The true lilies, garden lilies, are a very large group of perennials that you can enjoy in your garden here in Denmark for many years, provided you follow a few basic rules.

Planting depth

Lilies should be planted deep. 15-20 cm. This does not apply to Lilium candidum, the Madonna lily, which should be planted at a depth of approx. 5 cm.

Planting time

Garden lilies have a bulb that does not have a true dormancy period. The best time to plant them is in the autumn, but most are planted in the spring, when there is the largest selection.

Planting, soil and fertilizer

Garden lilies require well-drained soil. In winter, water should not stand around the bulb. They can be grown in raised beds, pots or garden beds where extra drainage is created in the bed. Here you can make a mixture of leca, pot shards and potting soil.

During the growing season, garden lilies require a good supply of water and fertilizer 2-3 times during the growing season. They must never dry out. Lilies grow larger and stronger the longer they live.

Pests

Orienpet hybrids, also called OT hybrids, are crosses between oriental lilies and trumpet lilies (e.g. tree lilies). These have shown good resistance to lily beetles.
